Squeezy 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2022 6/0 Uni Thread Black B10S Stinger size 10 .020 lead wire base Olive Marabou Crystal Flash Chenille from starter kit Grizzly Feather Question, I’ve learned there is a hackle gauge. My understanding is that hackle is sized for the hook used. Without the tool nor a large selection of hackle, any general rule of thumb for trimming to size? I just did a hook gap on this one. Thanks!
Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2022 There is no better gauge then the actual hook. Use the hook gap and hook length as your gauge. .
flytire 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2022 The hook provides all of the proportions you’ll need shank length = 1 1/2 hook gape

flytire 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2022 From the eye of the hook to the bend of the hook shank (the straight part of the shank before it begins to bend) is equal to 1 1/2 times the hook gape. Perfect for hackle length.
niveker 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2022 I was finishing up my La Belle wet fly pattern for the Fourth of July swap last night. Looking at the bits and pieces of duck quill littering my desk, I had the masochistic idea of trying my hand at a married winged wet. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I say. I guess I'd have to call it a variant of the La Belle pattern. Proportions are a bit off: tail is too long, or hook is too short, take your pick. Same with the beard. Tips of the beard fibers should be stacked better. The married quills could be aligned a bit better on both the wing and tail. I had the unfortunate idea to finish the head with white thread, in keeping with the color scheme, but it really looked like crap, so I touched it up with some black nail polish in the end. I should have unwrapped the white thread before the the final whip finish and switched to black. I'll get those few threads at the rear of the head with the second coat.
