Floated the Upper Mississippi

Recommended Posts

My wife and I floated part of the Upper Mississippi yesterday with guide, Kip Vieth. Kip was the Orvis freshwater guide of the year for 2017.  We have fished with him for ten years and he does a terrific job. For a Sunday, there were very few boats on the river. The occasional thunder, lightning, rain, and wind might have had something to do with it. All the above were minor nuisances, but overall the conditions were good. I started with a Boogle Bug and she started with a Murdich Minnow. She caught fish and they would not respond to the popper.  Switching to another color Murdich got me on fish. Later in the day she tried a Sparkle Grub and caught fish until a northern bit it off on a screaming run. We caught a bunch of fish and lost some. Most of the lost ones were OE. At times we sought cover, but were able to fish throughout the day and only used two flies apiece.  A great day and today we are tired. Several pictures follow and all caught on the Murdich.  The fish were very healthy and we had some pretty spectacular hits and jumps

Beautiful fish Tom, and it’s always good to have the wife along to show us how to do it!  I’m healing up from some surgery but hope to back on the water in a couple of weeks. Smallies are definitely on the menu as well as some small stream trout. Thanks for sharing you photos.

Mike.

I’ll say they are some nice fish, especially for river bass this time of the year. Nice trip and thanks for sharing.
