WWKimba 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2022 1 hour ago, DarrellP said: Kim, Libertone is a name I recognize. Yeah, and many consider this his signature pattern. A quick story (well as quick as I can be!). I ran a series of beginner tyer swaps starting in September of COVID Year #1 - I figured that many who had thought about tying as a hobby in the past would finally pull the trigger, being locked at home and all. As we all know that videos (and OLD SCHOOL - books!) can only do so much - each lacks feedback. So, I ran a series of swaps each month - streamers, then nymphs, then .... to dry flies as the last month. When the wet fly part came up one of my participants said they wanted to do the Genessee Jewel and wanted some hints on its tying. Needless to say I had to mention that not only did i know the pattern BUT that I was a neighbor of the designer! Mark was a fine tyer and teacher as well as an EXCELENT family man - loved his wife, proud of his kids and the finest of Grandpas! I miss him. vicrider 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2022 This was a tough one for me. OK is not the home of fly tying legends unless we went with carp flies, which maybe I should have. I also could have gone with my own design of the "Red Ass and Glass" soft hackle but since I'm the only one who uses it that would not really be representive of OK. I did find on "fly" that was developed in OK and MO trout and small mouth waters as far as I could find. Since the Mop Fly had gained such notoriety there would of course have to be variations. One of the variants coming out of guys guiding on our limited winter trout waters was the Mega Worm. It falls into the same category as the Mop but is tied with a completely different material. The yarn is baby blanket yarn and is tied in 3-5" lengths in different colors and styles but has an undulating swim action that has proven a killer on many of our streams and is the fallback fly for many guides who generally start people with "name" flies to begin with. I have a limited amount of material donated some time ago by a guide. Otherwise it's a lot of yarn to buy to just tie a few flies. The colors are mixed and the hook is a 60 degree jig hook with tungsten bead. If you use it and get a lot of missed fish try trimming the tail some and re-melt to hold it together. vicrider 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2022 I have to amend my previous thread to acknowledge the presence of a fly tying, writing, and fishing Hall of Fame as an Okie. When looking for patterns I did not realize his would qualify as Okie flies but his flies are mainly used on real trout water around the country and the Mega Worm is true Okie fly both in inception and in style. I can see a Mega Worm saying to a Dave Whitlock fly, hold my beer and watch this.
