Hanging it up

Recommended Posts

This may not be the proper place for this, but no other place seems to fit.  I'm getting out of fishing because I can't wade w/out falling in the water.  And I mean ankle deep water. There I go.

But anyway, I'm selling some high-end rods.  I'll put them on Ebay if no one here is interested.

So if you're in the market for some good rods (Sage, Winston, Orvis) at a good price, let me know. In Classifieds, now is my first deal on a XP:  It's a $650 rod new, and the condition is excellent.

Sorry to hear about your health issue. What Orvis rod are you selling?

A note for all of us -- getting older not much fun is it?   I have more than one angler I fish regularly that has difficulty just stepping on to my skiff.... Heck I've even fished one fly angler who was completely blind and another fly angler that was wheelchair bound... No it's not what you're used to, and probably something you never considered... but you really can fish late into your years if you've a mind to... Here's a photo of Capt Bouncer Smith (randy smith) an IGFA Hall of Fame angler with fifty years as a charterboat captain behind him ( and too many to count world records for his anglers over the years...) - now retired since he has great difficulty even standing... On the day he and a buddy fished with me, he needed a walker to make it from his truck to the dock and once he was on board he had to remain sitting all day long since his legs aren't working very well any more.. Then he proceeded to outfish all of us...

ps... I'm only 74 years old now and still going full time as a guide when I have anglers... Hope my string runs a few more years but it will run out for me like it does for everyone else.  If you still want to fish don't give up... My oldest angler (that  I know of... ) was 87 years old and his partner, up in his eighties as well....

I have two A list go to fishing partners who I’ve been fishing with for over 30 years now. One turns 70 this year and still climbs trees to bow hunt and can drag his deer out alone. The other is a disabled vet who can no longer climb in my boat from a bank. He can still get in if a dock is available but that’s rare so our trips have been limited to a few a year. Currently I am just fine but I do see myself replacing my boat with something easier to launch and get in and out of from the bank. Yes it’s gonna happen sometime.

Well, I'm 77 years old.  Wish I could wade, but for now, it's fishing from the bank...which isn't fishing much at all.  I've got lots of stuff I should get rid of but fortunately fly rods don't eat and upkeep on them is nothing.

See the Classifieds. I'm lead to believe that to mention the Orvis rods on this site isn't permitted.

At 73 I know what you mean.  All future trips gonna be mostly guided and float deals minimum wading for sure...

I didn't take it to mean just Orvis rods.  I  took it to mean The Lodge was not the proper venue for a post mentioning selling an item.  On another site I'm on, the mere mention of an item for sale would be forbidden.

Sorry to hear about your decline and its effect on your fishing.  Being past 78 now, I have started to see some declines myself.  My problem is arthritis, which is making it harder to tie rather than fish.  Since its confined (at present,) to the fingers of my right hand, I can still cast.  I am left handed, and still get the flies tied, but its painful if I am not careful.  Won't be hanging anything up just yet.

Getting older isn't for sissies - that's for sure... About two years ago I finally broke down and added a trolling motor to my skiff (after poling it for years and years)...  I still use my pushpole - but I'm too slow now.... by the time I get to where the fish were - they're gone...   This and other small touches I hope will keep me guiding a few more years - but there will come a day when it's all behind me... Until then I'll still be working both day and night trips as they come and I really do believe that actual work keeps you going...
