Ausable Wulff

IMG20230312153229a.jpg

Hook: #12  dry

Thread: Fire orange, 8/0

Tail: Woodchuck tail

Wing: White calf tail

Body: Australian possum dyed burnt orange

Hackle: Brown and grizzly

Notes:

The original pattern,  created in the 60's by Ausable River legend and fly shop owner Francis Betters, calls for tailing of woodchuck guard hairs.  I prefer the hairs from the tail which are a tad thicker and much stiffer.  The tails are cheap and they make a great tailing material.

I have read in several places that Mr. Betters' original body was undyed Australian possum, but he changed it to a dyed burn orange after noticing many of the bugs on the Ausable had an orange hue to their bodies, which he attributed to the minerals in the local waters.  That may also be the reason for his use of bright orange thread in many of his patterns.

That's real nice.  It looks good and buoyant

That looks good.  I can't tie those wings to save my life.  I can tie bronze mallard wing/shell for spey flies but wet fly wings elude me.  What type and size of hook did you use?

I admit I tie stuff that is “consumable”, but those type flies look like you might need to glue the heads?
