Squeezy: We posted at the same time.  If you want it it's yours. As cphubert said, the fly doesn't have to be elaborate.  Look at the fly I proposed: https://youtu.be/VeejKV-0eDI

I lacquer the head (sally's) then use colored nail polish on a sharpened dowel rod to form the eyes. Going to try clear gorilla glue as a base for the next batch of heads then paint the eyes.

I always just cut a toothpick in half - cut end for the eye and pointed end for the pupil.

I'll do it then.

Ugly bugs them hellgrammites.  The adults are fearsome looking too.  I had a big a.. Dobson fly land on me while fishing the Kings River.  Scared the living crap out of me.  They are no small critter.

When I was a kid we used to scour under the rocks to use them for bait, hook them under the collar and catch a lot of nice fish for the frying pan. I caught this one while fishing Vermont a few years ago while isolated.

I agree the fish don't care...I was just pointing out what Mr. Fulsher preferred and used.

Do you fish Thunder Creek streamers on your favorite stream(s)?

If my memory serves me well...and as a footnote to the Thunder Creek flies...they were originally known as Carrie Stevens reverse tied bucktails.

Thanks for the additional info Norm. I always enjoy learning more about the history of the sport.

I know what you mean.  I haven't tied a hellgrammite pattern, so was looking at different patterns on the web.  Most seem to me to be way too complicated for a fly that's meant to be fished on or near the bottom, resulting in a lot of lost flies.

The Hellgramite could be as simple as a black Woolly Worm with the hackle trimmed short.
