Ronn Lucas, Sr.

Recommended Posts

I just learned the Ronn Lucas, S. has passed away. He was a great hook maker and also a kind, warm, friendly gentleman of the first order.

I will miss my too infrequent contacts with him.

George

Sad news. Didn’t know him but I have really enjoyed looking through his website. Definitely a great resource and inspiration for tying classic salmon flies. Condolences to his friends and family.

That's too bad. I might be mistaken, but I think that he was the same age as Jeff Beck who just passed as well. I'm not on FB, but I bet many folks are just familiar with what he was doing for the last decade plus time frame. He used to sell other fly tying materials before he got into the salmon hook business. Just like a lot of other tyers, he was extremely generous with sharing materials. Over twenty years ago, on the old VFS tying forum site, I was searching for very fine diameter deer hair that would still be good enough for flaring. He was kind enough to send me several patches to try out. I bought some of his materials at some point after that. I still use his dubbing all the time for some bass patterns. Here's a pic of some of his stuff that he had.

Regards,

                       Mark

Ronn was a good guy. He was very active here on this site for about 10 or so yrs back around the early 2000's, and was always helpful to the salmon fly guys here that were just starting out. When I saw him say on facebook last month that he had tied his last fly and was shutting down his tying area, I somewhat figured something must have been wrong health wise. Godspeed Ronn, you will be missed by many.

Ronn battled cancer for the last year and passed on Jan 12.

Many of you knew or followed Ronn on his website, classicflytying, or FAOL.

Ronn was a terrific tyer who eventually focused on the artisitic side of tying and many of his creations were featured in various magazines and online forums.  Ronn was known for using unusual and inexpensive material, that many other tyers looked past, to creat artisitic flies.  Many tyers from around the world communicated with Ronn over the last 30 years, trading tips and inspiration.  Ronn made friends around the globe through his mentoring and creatinve tying.

In 2006 Ronn bought the classic handmade hook making business from Ron Reinhold and made the best handmade hooks in the world for the last 16 years.  In the summer of 2022 Ronn sold the business and trained a new hookmaker to continue the tradition of classic hookmaking to Garren Wood.

Thanks for this great post rstearns. When I began this topic a couple of weeks ago I decided not to go into the details of his illness, but I am glad you took the time to tell the folks here what exactly happened to Ronn. I've been tying on his hooks for the last 10 years +or- and you are right...they are the best. He will be missed, and I wish Garren Wood well!!

George I understand, I just wanted to make sure everyone knows the facts.

Watch on the auction site, his material went to Doug at featherfreak and should show up soon.

Garren was the right person to take over the hook business and as it requires a tremendous amount of detail work.
