Capt Bob LeMay 0 Report post Posted January 26 Down here the big tarpon are beginning to come back inshore (not really fishable yet but you'll see an occasional big one rolling along the coast). If the winter continues to have mild weather Whitewater Bay out of Flamingo will be in business with them - any day now.. It if gets cold again - they'll scoot back out into the Gulf and we'll be missing them until it warms up again... I know folks up north are hard pressed with winter and all - here's a tease from my house... my one hibiscus is in bloom now - a good sign of milder weather to come.... Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted January 26 Pretty hibiscus Bob. I'm looking forward to spring in a few months here so I can get the garden and bonsai trees and everything back outside to enjoy. Here in Michigan we actually have had a real lack of snow/cold up to this point, until yesterday that is. We finally got hit with a blizzard that dumped about 9" of snow on us. Steve you guys on the east side of the state seem to be getting all the snow this year -- we had only one snowfall that could be called Lake Effect, and that didn't even crack 10" here in Whitehall. Not that I'm complaining. Looking forward to spring over here, too.
ScienceGuy141 0 Report post Posted January 28 Seems like its been overall mild temp-wise here in Minnesota. I could be wrong, but seems warmer and snowier than normal. Over 50" of snow have fallen total, but I may have spoken too soon about the temp with a cold snap on the way.

Yeah, that bothers me more than the cold temps. 24 minutes ago, ScienceGuy141 said: seems warmer and snowier than normal. Definitely warmer than normal here in central MA, but certainly not snowier. I don't think the grass has been hidden under the snow for more than a day or two. But like you, I don't want to speak too soon, our 'Monster Blizzard of '78' did happen the end of January, so anything is still possible. .

upnorthtier 0 Report post Posted January 28 Hard for me to comprehend that flowers are blooming, it wont be happening here until June. Have to be the mildest winter i seen here in the up north Yukon for the past 25 years so far. Still 2 months to go so not out of the woods yet. Hardly any snow on the ground, maybe a foot. Daylight gain in the Yukon right now is over 5 minutes a day, gaining an hour every 11 days. I can see the difference daily. Will have daylight till 10 pm by the end of March and by end of May 20 hrs of daylight, never really gets dark, looking forward to it..

The darkness is the worst part of the winter, imo. You can dress for the cold, but the darkness can get to me. Cloudy, short, dark days sure make me appreciate the longer days and when you can actually feel the warmth of the sun.

On the bright side we have had a ton of precipitation in the last few months-thankfully it's been in the form of rain. I heard the other day that the Massachusetts drought is officially over, the meteorologist say we're +3"s. Hopefully the trout will recover well from last summer.
