Vintage Fly Hooks

Recommended Posts

I happened upon what I considered to be a pretty good bargain, a nice old lot of fly tying equipment and supplies. The highlight is over 40 boxes of Herter's hooks. They are probably 25-40 years old. The ones that have price tags on them are around $1.50 - $1.75 each. They are in brand new condition, no rust, all wrapped in wax paper in cardboard boxes. I have already tied a few flies on some of them and I like them quite a bit. Should I use them or are they worthwhile to hold onto as more or less a vintage collectable? They sure were a heck of lot cheaper than modern hooks, when they were new and now.

Any advise?

I think I would use them for tying only the "Classic" old time patterns using as close as you can get to original materials.

Just my opinion, others will vary! biggrin.gif

It depends on what type of hooks they are. Vintage salmon hooks are in demand, but I'm not sure about others. I was given some 40 yr. old Herter's streamer hooks a while ago and use them to tie classic streamers.

I just went to ebay and did a search of Herter's. There are quite a few items there, so it may be worth checking out. I have two old fly boxes filled with old flies. One was used and the hooks are rusted but the flies are still very interesting. The other the flies were never used and still have the tags on them. That box the flies are all from Weber's of Steven's Point. I have looked and played with the idea of posting them for sale on ebay.......however it is a hard decision. user posted image
