Fly Tying

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody!

I'm planning on getting a better bunch of markers for colouring my flies with but not quite sure on what to buy.

What kinda markers do you use, sizes, brands and good base colours to start with?

Hey Uffe,

I use mostly Pantone markers. I have about 80 colors, about a dozen different browns, same with greens and olives in different shades, about 20 different yellows, 6 shades of grey, then there's blues, reds and oranges. They last for years and each marker has three tips. Fine medium and bold. I also use Staedler Lumocolor markers, in brown and black. Staedler also makes a marker eraser, that is good for removing permanent marker and/or blending colors. For super fine lines I use Pigma Micro markers from Japan. I have a few Prismacolor markers but they only have two tips. I enjoy coloring flies. It's like a little 3D canvas.

I'll second the Pantones mentioned by Graham. I use these a lot and seem to get richer colours from them than others. And the colour range is unmatched anywhere. I have tried most of the others and feel personally Pantone rule the roost. Other ones out there I am fond of are the Edding markers from Germany. But they are very hard to get a hold of this side of the pond. Paul Whillock I believe is selling them now but not sure of all the colours he has available. Black, Brown and Yellow I believe. Pantones also called ( Tria I believe in Europe ) are more expensive than the others but you get what you pay for.

And yes those are the ones in your link. There is also a gadget called a Letrajet. You slip in the pen into it and hook it up to a compressor and it operates like an airbrush. And the good thing is ... no cleaning ... just slip in a different pen when you want a new colour. It blows the ink off the tip. Anyone that has used an airbrush has to love the no clean up feature.

Those are roughly the colours I use as well.

I would add

469 to the browns ( mixed with black a great Salmonfly top colour )

471 to the brown orange range ( great Salmonfly bottom colour )

119 to the greens ( Dragonflys )

1205 a creamish yellow ( I use to mainly wipe off colours and lighten areas, also a great golden stone bottom )

Hi Dale,

Wow, I've looked at it in your avatar,

but now I really see it-Amazing.

I'm sure this isn't the 1st time you've

fielded this so forgive me, but what

are the legs made of?

They're really exceptional.

O.K. please disregard this-not the

compliment of course, but the

question. I just saw your fly

pattern for sale on hatchmasters

and I know you must be thinking

"Order the pattern ya' deadbeat!"

Thanks Dale, I will have to get those colors. The store I go to has so many colors to choose from it's always hard to decide. Yesterday I realized I had three colors that I have two of. lol.

He Sjo, I also like Prismacolor markers, very similar to Pantone. Dark Umber is a nice dark brown color.

They do last for years, if you keep the caps on, and I noticed that some of my older ones, the color on the outside wrapper fades. So I always keep a sheet of white paper on my desk. I often print out in color the insect I'm tying and then mark the paper with markers to find the closest match.

FL H2O laugh.gif

A combination of porcupine quills and nymph legs. But no worries there is a lot more information needed past the legs in the CD ... laugh.gif
