Upstate 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2023 Been awhile since I've been on but I figured this would be the best place to get an idea. I've been teaching a fly-tying class at my my school for the past couple months. Next week is the last day and the kids want to tie something with dumbell eyes. Anyone have a pattern that uses small/medium dumbell eyes that they would be interested in sharing? Warmwater pattern for trout/bass would be great. here are some examples of the stuff we've done. ScienceGuy141 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2023 Clouser, Near nuff crayfish, Near nuff sculpin all call for dumbell eyes and are relatively simple to tie.
flytire 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2023 clouser minnow would probably be the easiest
niveker 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2023 (edited) Nice jobs with the kids. Hard to beat a Clouser for any type of water. Also: Dragonfly and damselfly nymphs, simple crayfish pattern (weighted in the tail), wooly buggers, Whitlock's Near Nuffs. Edited May 17, 2023 by niveker lol - Just saw @scienceguy's & @flytire's posts, must be an echo in here.

Upstate 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2023 thanks for the reply's so far. A clouser would be a good one. I should have also said that I was looking to maybe incorporate some rabbit strips into the fly. we haven't used that for a material yet.

niveker 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2023 Dumb Bunny might be good. https://youtu.be/KPdA7RFgh8g Looks relatively simple. I think I would finish the head with a dubbing loop of contrasting color and just use a long shank hook. Flagler ties a slightly different version on a fancy hook. https://vimeo.com/137271049

Upstate 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2023 Went with the creek leech. Had everything I was looking for. Rabbit, dumbbell eyes and dubbing. Plus I thought it would be an awesome addition to my smallmouth flybox. Used materials I had on hand size 6 ahrex curved nymph hook small dumbbell eyes barred/clear silk legs Krystal dub medium brown brown marabou gold variant/black rabbit strip I think the smallies will like it
