August Flies From the Vise

Recommended Posts

Mark, the  4th from the top would mimic a catalpa worm well.

I also find red to be killer on bluegill.  Good luck!

Last of the tricos, for now anyways. This one is Ed Engle's Drowned Trico Spinner, using what I have available (differences noted). Ed says your thorax "can always be bigger" on this one, but I think mine probably did get too big and shortened my abdomen. That extra 0.5 mm sure does make a big difference visually on a 3.5 mm body.... This version is from his video, a slight variation from Tying Small Flies (yes, flyflinger, one of the great "modern" fly books, but I'm guessing his personality comes across on the video true to form, seems like a great guy).

Hook - TMC 2487 (EE uses 2488H, which is much heavier but I'm gonna have to make do with my fine wire version)

Thread - Gordon Griffiths 14/0 brown (EE uses a black thread)

Tails - Three dun Microfibbits, split with thread

Abdomen - Small black Ultrawire

Wing - Aunt Lydia's white (EE uses Soap Wing Fiber,  but "any white polyester will do")

Thorax Black beaver dubbing (EE uses rabbit)

Thank you, I'll keep you guys posted. I can't wait to go. I'll probably keep tying till I go, I'm so amped up about it. Now I'll look up catalpa worm.

The two flies that I have caught the most Bream on are a Cajun Coachman and a hairwing McGinty.  Third place goes to a pale yellow professor.  The Cajun Coachman consistently produces bigger fish.

Thanks, I'll look them up. I'm looking for more bugs to tie.

McGinty

+1

Always surprises me how well the McGinty does for bass and other panfish

Busy tying 16 or so dozen ant flies of various flavors  for my favorite non-profits

God bless ya. Nice ants, I like those blue ones. It would take me many moons to tie 200 flies.
