Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted June 20 I've seen a few really dumb "fly fishing products" in my time, and I usually just shake my head and forget about them, but this one takes the cake. Not sure if you guys have seen this or not, but it's been really making the rounds on all the facebook fly fishing buy/sell pages the past few days. I guess the "inventor" of it is trying to get it out there as much as he can. I highly doubt even a single fly angler is gonna want it though. Why would you want to saddle yourself with a cumbersome biga$$ rolodex around your waist lol I especially love where it says "for anglers who struggle with the time consuming process of placing flies in a box"... ummm, what? 😆
Mark Knapp 0 Report post Posted June 20 Yeah, not for me. That guy can't be a real fly fisherman, he doesn't even have an Orvis vest on. Or a fishing hat with flies in it.
Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted June 20 I agree but It’s not as absurd of an idea as a Richardson 5 drawer chest box that fly fishermen fawn over. I actually think it’s a way better idea than a chest box. I’m not sure of the website name of spinoBAIT.
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted June 20 Yeah I never got the appeal of that chest box either. Just a big heavy thing on your chest in your way. I kind'a think just because Joe Humphreys used one that's prob why some guys want one.
Capt Bob LeMay 0 Report post Posted June 21 Over many, many years I've seen various "brilliant ideas" that absolutely flopped in the way of fishing tackle goods. I got my first job in a tackle shop in 1972 (Reef Tackle, 79th St, Miami) and it was a place that a young fellow would actually be able to learn that business from the ground up (they actually taught me the basics of rod repair, reel repair, making rigs, tending bait tanks) - it was a great opportunity for someone going to school on the GI bill with every afternoon and evening open. Fast forward a few years when I got interested in fly fishing - and was actually able to learn the basics of building fly rods from Uslan Rods where the old guy actually built five sided split bamboo rods while the shop also made every other kind of rod as well as worked with the first generation of graphite blanks for fly fishing....  As a result of that background I was a bit less likely to fall for this or that new product that didn't actually work on the water. Still, like most, I must admit to having fallen for this or that gadget over the years... most were a disappointment. Speaking of that, here's a gadget that really does work very well - it's called a Boomerang tool. They run around $15 and come with a zinger built in. It's a small pair of line snips that will cleanly cut mono, fluoro, or braid from very light all the way up to over 100lb lines with serrated jaws that allow a clean cut on braid every time.... I was given one by one of my anglers and nowadays wouldn't be without it on the water or in my shop when doing the leader rigging that's basic prep for a fishing guide doing a wide variety of trips year 'round. You can find them on E-Bay and locally they're now in a few of the shops that I visit... well worth trying...

Capt Bob I had never seen/heard of that nipper before. I like that it has a zinger built right in. That would be a good nipper for me to pin to my backpack because I always forget to swap my nippers from my vest to my pack when I hike into warmwater sections and don't take my vest with me. I may grab a pair of those.  Norm, you don't like it? Well there goes your Christmas gift idea I had 😆

flyflinger 0 Report post Posted June 21 I'm still one of those dinosaurs wearing a good ol' fishing vest while fishing. It has pockets. I put fly boxes in those pockets! Some of those boxes are very old Wheatley boxes.    I know there is a growing attraction for chest packs, fanny packs, belly packs, lanyards, and all manner of day-packs and shoulder slings, etc.  I have nothing against any of those - just not my proverbial cup of tea . . . Regards,  . . . and while we're on that subject, I use this $10 nipper tool:   Please explain why I might need this one for $250???    Just sayin' . . .
mikechell 0 Report post Posted June 21 Sooooooo ... refilling this thing would be <somehow> easier than refilling a fly box? What, the fly WANTS to be in the spinner so badly it jumps right off the vise into it? The guy in the picture isn't even wearing one ... it's a badly cut/paste of the image at the top. Oh, wait ... You could get several.  Then use them to roll down hillsides to quickly get to the water.

MuskyFlyGuy 0 Report post Posted June 22 My wife and I were introduced to the Boomerang several years ago by our guide in Canada. We used braided line on our spinning and bait casting reels and it smoothly and accurately cuts 8-80 lb test braid. Our tippet on the fly rods is measured in pounds, not Xs. It works well for us on braid, flouro, and mono. Tom
Capt Bob LeMay 0 Report post Posted June 22 Since I work out of a nearly 17' skiff -the amount of gear carried aboard can get ridiculous if I'm not careful (not to mention two different EPIRB devices for safety...)... Of course this or that really needed item - that will be what I forgot to bring... And so it goes -much of my time has nothing to do with fishing - and everything to do with keeping that hard used skiff running properly - both on the trailer running down the road, and on the water.... If I were ever fortunate enough to take a bonefishing trip for fun - I'd be doing everything possible to be in a place where I'd be wading instead of fishing out of a skiff... each day.
