Griff head cement

Recommended Posts

I got a bottle of Griff's Thin Head Cement with the Patriot vise and materials.  I had a helluva time removing the cap but finally got it open.  It's very thin as advertised. I can't find the stuff at any of the major suppliers of fly tying material. Anyone familiar with it?  I think it would do a good job in filling up the head without adding bulk, like SHAN does.

It was discontinued several years ago. I bought several bottles back then and still have one full. With one tiny drop per fly it lasts a long time and doesn't seem to thicken too bad.

If you find SHAN too thick, I have thinned it with lacquer thinner. I keep one bottle original for when I want a thicker coat and one that I thin down when I want it to soak in more.

Someone mentioned on another thread that or maybe here, that you could thin SHHAN with rubbing alcohol.

Go into you medicine cabinet and look at the bottle of rubbing alcohol. It has water in it.

You don't want water in your head cement.

Use nail polish thinner.

Go to a beauty salon and buy Beauty Secrets Nail Polish Thinner.

I wanted to buy nail polish thinner at the drugstore, but they didn't have it.  What they had was nail polish REMOVER.  Acetone free.  I didn't read the details, just bought it.  I tried to thin some clear nail polish, but it didn't work and left a gooey mess.  So I think it's better to stick to a proven medium.
