Fly Tying

IMG_3587.thumb.jpeg.8d505d990830de8d9408db1723655eee.jpegFound this pattern in Hale’s How to tie Salmon Flies.  I’m not 100% happy with it, little too full in the front of the body and tho the pattern describes the JC go over the tippet, I feel with would have looked better under the tippets.  I got a little heavy handed adding a curve to the horns also.  See the recipe below,IMG_3582.thumb.jpeg.42f423cd8f369699ce6addd6e4953260.jpegI did subs on this one

 - Ryan Houston’s Indian Crow Sub for the top veiling

- seal was subbed with Angora

- I chose a hackle closer to maroon than majenta.

-heron was subbed with pheasant rump

- the peacock was subbed with cinnamon turkey as my wings were too short(should like be tied on a smaller hook in retrospect)

-subbed salmon neck for chatterer, kingfisher in enroute but taking the slow boat I suppose.
- left out the yellow macaw horns as I don’t have them and I couldn’t get a turkey fibre to cooperate.

As always, I’m open to any notes in tying.

I think the fly looks good. Remember, nobody ties a perfect fly and we are all our own harshest critic.

Looks good to me but I don't know what you're after. That's for you.

IMHO you have some innate skill. That doesn't seal the deal at all.  Lots of practice is necessary to bring it to fruition or get the most out of it.  Keep working and honing that skill.  You've already lapped most of us.

Thx for the feedback Cenafly, the practice really is key but the help from the flytying community has be incredible to get me going. I’ll keep at it, still learning something new every-time I sit at the vice and loving it.
