All of this talk about AI?!?!?!

Recommended Posts

For one of my degrees one of my majors was Computer Science.  I retired last year after working 45 years in IT.

Back in school in the mid 1970's we discussed AI.  I looked at the history of AI a little while back.  The idea has been around since about 1956 and a working AI type program was in use in 1966 that was good enough to fool people into thinking a real person was replying to their typed messages.

Why all the attention lately?  Is it just hype?

What took people so long to realize what's going on?

Just wondering.

It's getting attention now because Invidia's Blackwell AI processors have advanced to the point that AI is going to start taking jobs that people are doing.

For example, my son has a dual degree in mechanical engineering and industrial design from the University of Michigan and he works for a high tech firm that has their software imbedded in other software providers like Microsoft. He told me that computer programmers are leaving their professions to start learning jobs that are not threatened by AI.

I am a retired diagnostic radiologists. AI is now being used to preview mammograms to locate suspected abnormalities before the examinations are interpreted by the radiologists.

People have been worried about losing their jobs to AI, robotics, automation, etc. for decades.  It seems more often that growth slows down in certain fields.  Off the top of my head I can't think of any professions that have been destroyed.

I don't think we're going to end up in a WarGames or Terminator scenario due to AI but I might be wrong.  I also didn't think that people in power would be stupid enough to put so much customer information online and poorly protected.

AI will eventually take over some jobs like computer programming.

The recent worldwide failure of computer systems that took down the airline system, hospitals, business, etc was due to a single point failure when Crowdstrike sent out an update for its virus and cyber attack prevention software. Crowdstrike is the leading provider of protections software and you don't even have to be a customer of Crowdstrike because their software is imbedded in other companies software. For example, Microsoft has Crowdstrike imbedded in their programs. So when a defective update was sent millions of computers went down.

As "best of breed" software companies become the dominant providers for the majority of corporations, the probability that this will happen again increases.

I have a generator, a five gallon can of gasoline and a weeks worth of bottled water. AI don’t scare me.

I have some friends that teach. They have found papers that were written by AI.

One had two students turn in the same paper.

It will happen.  Hopefully, when AI takes over, it will be less destructive than "The Matrix" or "Terminator" ... but probably not.  I think Asimov's "I Robot" was as good a prediction as ever.  Unfortunately, AI will take over before we have self aware super-capable robots to help us.  We're likely doomed.

Like most I've watched the increasing interest in "AI" ....  Now if only everyone would take as great an interest in our antiquated power grid...  It reminds me of all those "global climate change" types - that seem to ignore the basic fact that we're totally at the mercy our our star... for a warm, cool, or the kind of extreme clumate conditions that nearly wiped out all of the life on this ball of dirt once or twice - all those millions of years ago...

Nope, long bit of typing but it just went to political so I wiped it. Like flytire the AI takeover will find my ashes drifting in some stream (don't tell the EPA).
