Preparing to pilliage & plunder...Skol!

Recommended Posts

Been a while since I posted any "side projects" that have been going on in the shop. Figured I'd share a bit of what I have been working on between rod orders. Last year I went to my first renaissance festival and had a real good time. I'm not a huge fan of the way people dressed in the 1600's, but I do like the fact that people at the festival dress in other ways as well such as old world pirate, viking, saxton, etc etc. Being a huge fan of the modern day viking image (i.e- tv show Vikings, Last Kingdom, Vikings Valhalla) I dressed as a viking for last years renfest.

So with the renfest coming on in about 3 weeks I have been working on upping my game on the viking outfit for this years. Redid my fur mantle to look a lot more realistic by adding a hand made head/legs & tail to make it look like a real pelt. Airbrushed tan/white/gray/black fabric colors on it to make it look more real. Made a chestplate out of 6mm foam covered with leather and added other details. Just finished 3D printing a drinking horn and wet sanded/airbrushed it which I think came out 10 times better than I had hoped. And just finished build a sword & scabbard all by hand.

Still have some more things to do but it's really coming out looking rather go so far. And as a side note, it took 40 yr's to happen, but my 7th grade home ec teacher was right, sewing did come in handy one day 😂

Another piece of the viking outfit done. Needed a way to carry my wallet/camera/keys/sunglasses at the renfest and didn't like the options for stuff you could buy online. So made my own viking pouch out of hand riveted leather, fur and lacing. Couple spring gate rings work great as a clasp.

Just a flat piece of fur from the 2 yards of fur I bought. I cut out the shape of the head, then trimmed the hair with shears to shorten the area around the face. Then cut out and stitched on some ears, cut the eye holes and airbrushed it. Then I took some foam and spray adhesive that to the back side of it so I could use a heat gun to shape it so the head has a realistic curve to it. Then covered the foam on the backside with some leather to hide it.

Of course that’s how it’s done. Nice creativity and way outside the box thinking.

Took the viking shirt I wore last year and made it more of a viking tunic by adding 8" of leather to the bottom on front & back. Trimmed it with 1" wide leather strapping and added rivets to it to give it a leather armor look. It's all really coming together nice looking now. Just have to finish the bracers and boots and that should be the last of it.

Not fully done yet, but about 95% there. Put everything on tonight to make sure it was all comfortable and goes well together. Was a lot of work but came together really good looking. Will have better pics this weekend at the faire with all the rest of the stuff done but here's a quick pic of everything so far.

I'd grab the women and run like hell for the hills if I saw you leading a bunch of Vikings onto our shore. Looking good and you are a very ambitious. You spend almost as much time on your various side projects as Mark Knapp spends hunting and fishing.

Great day at the Ren-fest today. Will post some more pics later but this one is by far my favorite because I'm a HUGE Game of Thrones fan, and there was a pub there that actually had an Iron Throne 😎

Had a great time. Hung out most the day with a life long friend whom I haven't seen in person in prob 20+ yrs. To say my viking outfit was well received would be an understatement. Couldn't go more than 10 mins without someone telling me how much they liked it. Had prob 20+ people stop me and want to take a picture with me. And let me tell ya, go to a ren-fest dressed as a 6'4" Viking when most other guys are wearing 17th century frilly shirts, flop hats & tights, and the women flock to ya 😁

Was a really good time. Long hot day, but fun. Plan to go back again before it is over.

Have to say. Huge thank you to Mark (Mark Knapp) I got a surprise package in the mail last week. Was a bunch of real pelts from Alaska, thanks to Mark. To work into my viking Mantle.

I worked them in. Went today again to the renfest, 3rd time the past few weeks. But pic on the Iron Throne looked much cooler with Mark's pelts on my mantle👍
