Gardening - 2024

Recommended Posts

My brother's girl gave me 5 tomato plants she started from seed, all different heirloom varieties.

Been a great year for tomatoes for me -  here's the largest so far.

She has 35 tomato plants, all in containers, they cover her driveway and she has to park her car on the street.   She claims she has harvested over 400 pounds of tomatoes so far this year- LoL.

That’s a big WOW. My tomatoes have not even started to ripen yet. I am topping the indeterminate ones to see if that will drive them to ripen sooner.

I beilieve she has. It is impressive that tomato got that big so early. Tomato’s like that make me want to start growing tomato’s again.

If she lessons the amount of water as the tomato’s near maturation she can prevent or at least greatly limit those splits. Sometimes those big heirlooms need to be picked before maturing and left to ripen off the vine and out of the rain.

Its been more years than I care to admit since I had a vegetable garden, I forgot how rewarding and tasty it is.  The first few tomatoes to ripen never made it into the kitchen.

You are correct about picking them a little early to prevent splitting, especially with the recent rains.  As soon as they get a little soft, they get picked and put in the 'incubator' for a few days.

Giant one there. I actually just started growing my first tomatoes this year. Always wanted to try it but never did till this past spring. Bought a single plant and it's crazy how well it has done. Had a total of 22 tomatoes on it at the same time just a couple weeks ago. I've had three ripen fully in the past week. Been fighting some animals though. Lost two real big ripe ones to either a coon or possum. Whatever it is has started robbing me at night lately so I had to buy a screen fence and netting and think I have put an end to his thieving ways now.

Haven’t been rewarded from our garden this year. But the deer, rabbits have definitely been enjoying it. Going to move it to different area next year, so I’m not too concerned. Animals need to eat too!

Screw that! There's enough deadbeats getting a free meal off my hard work, I put a stop to it whenever I can.

My score card this year:

Groundhog: 1

Rabbits: 4

Chipmunks: 23

We have 16 miles of National Forest between our house and Cherokee land. I’d have to trap deer and elk too! lol
