Hoagy's Little Orange Mayfly

I had the pleasure of knowing Hoagy and for many years fishing a 7'6" bamboo rod he built for me back in the mid to late 1970's. One of the good guys.

Good-Evening-1080.jpg

Good Evening

Hook - Wet fly
Thread - White under floss body; black head
Tail - Golden pheasant tippet
Ribbing - Gold tinsel
Body: Scarlet floss or wool
Hackle - Brown
Wing - Dark blue – white tip (such as from mallard wing)

Don Bastian Note

The wing can also be tied using whole white duck quill sections underneath shorter dark blue mallard, because oftentimes the iridescent blue mallard feathers normally used for the wings are not long enough for larger sized flies.

Trout - Ray Bergman

Cool looking fly. The white tips on the wings, nice.
You finish the fly heads as good or better than anyone on the planet.

Lew Oatman's Brook Trout

We are our own worst critics after tying one for the challenge thread that I was not happy with (hot pink floss) I went and bought another spool of light pink floss and tied another also changed hook style.

hook- Mustad 3665A # 8, thread- white, tail- hackle fibers; orange over black over white to imitate a brook trout fin, body- cream/white floss 3/4 and light salmon pink 1/4 tied full with a gold tinsel rib, throat- hackle fibers; same as tail, wing-two grizzly hackles with two olive hackles covering; six painted alternating scarlet and yellow spots, cheeks- jungle cock nails, head- olive with bottom painted white.

That is something!  I’m sure there is a great back story here?  Given that the Garrison book was completed by Hoagy and published in 77,  he was still in his twenties.  Your rod would be one of his real early ones. Hope it is preserved and admired.
