I use a small pair of needle nose unserrated pliers to flatten and fold an upward angle to the quill (gently) and then tied them on one at a time on top of each other. Other than that about all I could suggest is practice, practice, practice. I now take apart anything that I don't like on these flies and keep trying until I get it to my satisfaction. I still have a long way to go looking at pictures online that look absolutely perfect to me.
