Quality wing material?

Recommended Posts

I’m really focusing on tying one pattern right now… the Leadwing Coachman. So far I’ve ordered several duck quills from an online fly tying retailer. To be honest, they all look mangled and misshapen to me. Where can I get good quality wing material?

Thanks!

Try giving them a little steam, it does wonders for rejuvenating a feather. Below is example of some turkey I got last week

washed and dried IMG_4464.thumb.jpeg.666186e9c60dd446d9197d4316902118.jpeg

you almost have to go into a fly shop and insect tying feathers vs buying online

or buy a half dozen packages and sort out the best pairs

you have a lot of usable feather slips in your example. granted you might not get a dozen flies out of them

yup give them a good steaming as mentioned and hope for the best. after steaming preen them back together. they should zip right back together

Thanks for the tip! I steamed a few quills this afternoon and that definitely makes a difference.
