Mark Knapp 0 Report post Posted October 18, 2024 No but they will take a fly. We fished the bottom, because these are bottom fish, at 45 to 120 feet with sinking lines and no cheating with extra weight. The weather wasn't always conducive to fly fishing so we fished conventional too. We also hunted deer while we were there. We ate pretty good too. Be sides all that, we had a great time. RickZieger 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2024 Might depend on how fast you reel them in. Nice group of fish. Rick
vicrider 0 Report post Posted October 20, 2024 Back when we tried to get deep enough for lakers in Lake Superior we tied on lead core braid for fly line. Never worked well and we ended up jigging regular tackle or trolling downriggers. If I knew about line weights versus numbers or letters back then I might have tried weighing the amount of lead core to equal the 8 or 9 wt line and tie that to a dacron braid backing. With actual flyline and I assume the fastest sinking ones how long did you have to wait it out to get down to 50 or 60'?

I haven't done it yet but, I plan to use this system on lakers down to 120 feet. And, I use the same system to get down to 40 feet for large sun fish in Lake Havasu. The fly line I make, using components of two different, commercially made fly lines, actually sinks faster than the printed sinking rates of the lines used by themselves. Presentation and the lines work together to get the line to sink at faster than a foot per second. Sometimes much faster than that. I weld thirty feet of T20 fast sinking line to 90 feet of T17 line. The "weight forward" line sinks much faster, with the tip sinking straight down than a line made of one material can sink laying parallel to the waters surface.
