odd size hook

Recommended Posts

I came across this old package of Mustad hook, from when they were in Norway.  Anyway, it's a size 17 and about 3x heavy. Maybe more.  It's in a paper envelope with an example taped to the outside.  Anyone ever heard of that?

Many years ago in a conversation with Elsie & Harry Darbee they told me the reason their flies were somewhat different than the usual was the simple reason they tied them on odd sized hooks...making them unique at that time. Those odd sizes been have, or were, readily available from England. Nowadays ???????

I got my hooks from eBay about ten years ago in a lot. Lots of hooks, I think in excess of 1000.  There was as I remember a lot of odd sized hooks.  Few if any were fly hooks, as far as I know and all were Mustad.  The hooks  above are model 1612 and are straight eye hooks

Good for catching the odd fish here and there...

I have a few odd numbered packs laying around as well.  With the lack of industry standardization, the actual hook size number is somewhat irrelevant.  I look at the gap, length, and wire diameter to suit what I am tying.  The "size" of the hook is somewhat of an afterthought (within reason).

My thoughts too, Swamp.
