Fishing the Upper Dolores River, CO

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I am seeking any and all info on fishing the Upper Dolores river in Colorado.  If anyone has any info on fishing this river I would love to hear it.

I would like to take a fishing trip in that area next October so I am gathering as much info as I can well in advance.

Thank you,

Phillip

@flytire

I will bet that the river was not as popular then than it currently is.  The same argument could probably be made for fly fishing in general.

I do hope to make this trip happen.

Thanks.

My pleasure. The Uncompaghre river is close to the Dolores and it's really good below ridgeway

I second the Uncompahgre River! . . . (not that there's anything wrong with the Dolores).   Given your posted location, I'm guessing you're already familiar with the San Juan.

@Sandan

Thank you, once again, for your suggestion.  I am not familiar with the Uncompahgre River, but I will definitely look into it.

Back around 8/22 you gave me some excellent advice on the South Platte.  I hope it has not changed too much since that time.

I appreciate your help.

@flyflinger

Thank you for your post. I will do my research on the Uncompahgre River.

As to the San Juan:  I have fished that amazing tail water since the 90's or thereabouts.  While I have mixed emotions about the SJ, I would now prefer to fish smaller trout rivers while I am able.  This last statement is made in reference to a sciatica issue with my left leg.  It infuriates me, but am not certain how it will affect my fly fishing once I am on the river.  I am 'going fishin'' no matter what.

In clarity, I am hoping a smaller river may be easier to navigate than the SJ with the leg issue.  When the time comes, the leg may not be an issue at all, but there is only one way to find out.

Thanks again.

I fished the Unc below Ridgeway a couple of days late last spring. It's good for sure.  Glad the advice on the SP helped. Next time you're in that neighborhood give mea holler.
