How recently was that book published?  Many of my favorite tying or lure crafting books were published so long ago that I doubt the items they mentioned are still being made...

thats were i got the info to ask here

however they are all stumped about the H & L vise

it is a discussion that nobody seems to know about that vise

I see and good point about the collectors.  There are European brands that are virtually unknown in the U.S., perhaps L&H is one of those?

I'm going to guess that its a H.L. Leonard vise from around the mid 70's.  I PM'd the guy over at Clarks that posted that thread a few days ago.  If you read that thread, folks think that it's a typo. I just think that he either called it that, or just had the two letters in reverse and didn't catch it. A proof reader wouldn't have noticed it since it really isn't a typo if that's the way he wrote it.

The guy was a fly fishing story writer that also tied his own flies. It's not a fly tying book, so it's not going to be super specific about the vise, thread, hook models etc. He also fished just about all bamboo, so it would be from the same company. The mid 1970's is way back, time wise now. He had a couple of articles in Fly Tyer. The one I looked at yesterday is about his favorite small stream, or stream patterns. There's nothing about tying them using this and that. There's pics of the fly patterns, but it's not indicating if he tied any of them. It's very generic.

Here's a thread from Clarks that Catskill John posted a pic of the one that he bought, a little before that thread was posted on Clarks. It's post number 8 in this thread. The picture is missing now, but I've had it on my PC since that thread was posted all those years ago. I'll attach below if it will still work on this forum.

If the guy really wants to find out exactly what vise it was, he should get in touch with A K Best or one of his other good friends that's still alive. They would probably know.

The vise I work with is either from the late seventies or very early eighties - just a very basic, super sturdy item... Guess I'm in the dinosaur category these days...
