Guest Report post Posted October 13, 2005 Hello everyone, I am tying up a bunch of San Juan Worms for a day of fishing on Saturday. Does anyone have any tips on how to debarb these hooks? No since leaving the barbs on since I release just about every one I catch. The hooks I am using is a Mustad 80200 and a Dai-Riki size 18 and 20. The fishies and I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks Jim
Joe Hard 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2005 just crush the barb with pliers
Guest Report post Posted October 13, 2005 That is my problem. I am not able to get these small pliers to crush it and a larger pair won't fit in the hook gap.
siestafred 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2005 You try needle-nose pliers ??
Guest Report post Posted October 13, 2005 Yes these are actually needle nose plies. The little ones that you can put in your pocket and carry with you on the river. Jim
Joe Hard 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2005 will your forceps work?
Guest Report post Posted October 13, 2005 Mine won't because they are straight, they are curved. I might have to look for a curved pair and see how they do. Thanks Jim
SullyTM 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2005 Do you have a file for use with metal? That will work. SullyTM
steelie 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2005 Good Day, At the vice... Sometimes I use the tip of my vise jaws to crimp down the barb. Steelie
fishyfranky 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2005 Crushing barbs with your vise can damage the jaws. So I use my old $20 special for this task. It has midge jaws so there is no problem getting into the gap of small hooks.
Guest Report post Posted October 13, 2005 Thanks guys. I found a real pair of needle nose pliers and the bent the barb down with no problem. I get my cheapie needle nose pliers aren't that great anymore. Thanks Jim
Sticky 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2005 I have a Leatherman knockoff that has squarejaw pliers, if you use the corner of a square jaw it is very effective. Becareful not to put too much of a small hook in the jaws since you could snap the hook. I crimp down the barb from each side and it works great. If you really wanted to go nuts get some softjaw square pliers.
Joe Hard 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2005 I would not put a file on a hook . Chances are it will weaken the hook, if you remove too much metal
SullyTM 0 Report post Posted October 14, 2005 Joe Hard...Good point. I would not use a metal file on small hooks. However, I have used a fine grooved metal file on bigger hooks like 2/0, 3/0 etc.. After smashing down the barb I carefully file down some of the remaining "hump". I just wish hook manufacturer's produced more barbless hooks.
