Guest Report post Posted December 31, 2003 Mike, I have not messed with the bullet head stuff much but I seen some nice Smallmouth flies that uses them but uses bucktail instead of body hair, so when I go to tie a few I just have a few questions for you

Guest Report post Posted January 1, 2004 I'm looking forward to that too! When you tie the head, have the ends of the butts evened up and start them just in front of where you want the head to end. This fly almost got me my first big Palomino Rainbow trout. I was fishing a small waterfall, and noticed this fish facing into the falls, grabbing the occasional bug or nymph that got washed over. I got directly behind him, about 15 feet back, and threw about 6 different dries, 4 different nymphs, and 2 different streamers at this fish. Only once did it even move to anything, and then it didn't take! This was amazingly frustrating since I had spent over two hours trying to catch this one fish. (I didn't feel a need to rest it because it couldn't see me well, and hadn't really chased any of my flies.) In frustration, I grabbed a size 4 Madam X in natural deer brown with a Red floss body, and black rubber legs. I basically splatted this bug hard about a foot in front of this fish, and he took it instantly! So of course... ...I was so surprised that he took it... ...I stood there staring for several seconds instead of setting the hook, the fish spit the fly, and I never moved it again! Stupid fish. Hadda be at least 18 inches long. Anyway, Im thinking of tying some with Black hair, Orange floss body, and Orange legs, jointed with a black marker. I can see it now, I'll tie 2 dozen of them, and they won't hatch!
MIKE*A 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2004 Awesome.............I'm playing w/black deer hair head, black chenille body, and I'm making the tail out of some orange Kip tail i had with some flashabou thrown in.......I thought that might be easier for the wing. What do you guys think? i thought because of the body shape and the really long wings, I would use the orange kip tied in at the tail to mimic the wing with the flashabou to mirror the light like the natural clear wing in between the orange veins. I also had some orange elastic to tie in at the head for the legs. Does that sound reasonable? Do you think I'm placing the orange "wing" to low on the body? woollywilma 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2004 Mike, sounds sweet! I've been playing with some cicada patterns recently to match that black and orange brood X, too. I've mostly been playing around with a foam body / head and orange bucktail or squirrel tail for the wing. I think your deer hair head would be better though because it's heavier and will smack the water better like the real thing. I would say that maybe your wing mihght be too low on the water. I'm only guessing but since these bugs don't hatch out of the water and have a peaceful "dun" stage on the water's surface, the cicadas will probably be hitting the water strugling with their wings buzzing trying to get themselves airborne again. So, I think a decently flared out bucktail wing tied in behind the head would be best. But, who knows. - Adam
MIKE*A 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2004 Yeah, now that i've thrown a couple together, I think your right.......I was trying to tie them up like a "Madam X" .........I'm just not getting the colors balanced out right.......oh well, back to the drawing board. thanx for the feedback. i would post a photo of my early results, but my camera is acting up, it won't download. mike
