Alex C. 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2005 It's a sulpher wet fly. I want to spice it up a little, but want to basicly keep it how it is. I was thinking a wire rib would help it, but I can't decide what color to go with, gold or silver?
Redwings1 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2005 I'd go with gold, or perhaps 'rust' to add a more segmented look.
skunkaroo 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2005 I think I would actually go with fine copper instead of gold or silver. It would shift the overall colour of the fly towards the orange end of the sulphur spectrum and the contrast would definitely highlight body segmentation. Gregg A 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2005 I'd use gold or copper. It would go better with the color of the hook. Nice fly.
Fry Flier 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2005 Gold for a subtle blend, Copper for more contrast. Determined by holding 12 rolls of tinsel and wire to the computer screen.
Robert_S 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2005 I think wire in any color will get lost in the dubbing, may want something flat, gold I think would look good, but you may want to try some different colors of Krystal flash, may not be real dramatic but add just enough to make you wonder whats different. down2earthlv 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2005 When I'm looking to add a subtle addition, I use pearl flash as a rib. It blends with any color, and adds just enough to turn a few extra fish heads...
Guest Report post Posted December 20, 2005 I find that Kori Bustard and Indian Crow always makes a fly look better.
Bud Guidry 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2005 i agree with paul, indian crow sides, cotinga cotinga for head and possibly cotinga cayana as a tail veiling. fine embossed gold tensil ribbing with fine silver round oval bordering it. maybe some rifle bird inthe tail too!!!!!!!! Isonychia 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2005 I vote for fine, relatively light-colored copper wire. Some of the sulfurs (Ephemerella invaria, Epeorus vitrea) have an orange-ish cast to their bodies, and the copper would accentuate that. John
Guest Report post Posted December 20, 2005 I am in the camp that votes for copper, as sulfurs actually have a pink/orange thorax/mid-section, particularly the egg bearing females. Since it is a wet fly (and therefore an emerger) I would try some with hot pink/orange thread and see what it looks like wet!
Joe Hard 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2005 Great fly, I would pass on the wire and use a 6/0 thread of tabboco or burnt oarnge, something brownish oarnge, also take a marker and add a few marks to the wing. Even a stand of flash twisted with a doubled peice of thread.
