atroutbum2 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2006 If you are looking at the hook eye down the length of the shank, i usually wrap clockwise. But when im counterribbing, binding down a palmered hackle, or securing a herl body that i wraped clockwise, i would then wrap in a counterclockwise direction, forming an X when the rib crosses the hackle. Jeff Kimball 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2006 Over the top for most everything but like atroutbum2 I'll throw a 1/2 hitch then cross wrap over a palmered hackle or any other less-than-robust material. My fishing partner has never had formal fly tying training and wraps both ways interchangeably without rhyme or reason. My buddy's 10year old son has been coming with me to the local fish&game club tying course and he seems to want to wrap from underneath. He writes right handed but between the instructor and I we think he just might have a bit of lefty in him. I don't think I ever put much thought into the vast iidiosyncrasies between the two methods until I went full rotary a few months ago. There's pros and cons to both! ~jk
Redwings1 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2006 I'm with ATB2...everything gets put in with clockwise wraps (over the top), unless counter ribbnig or figur-eighting in some eyes.
Fry Flier 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2006 Over the top for the most part, which would be clockwise.

Chase Creek 0 Report post Posted February 18, 2006 Clockwise (over the top) cuz THAT'S THE WAY I'VE ALWAYS DONE IT! I'm at the age now where change is confusing.
Guest Report post Posted February 18, 2006 Being right-handed, clockwise. A few years ago I was having tendon problems in my right hand, so was tyiong a bit left-handed (and not very well), so it was still over the top, but of course meant it was conter clockwise. I've recovered most of my dexterity with the right hand, so I'm tying exclusively right-handed again. things look much better. Mark Delaney
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2006 Over the top clockwise. I've never tried any other way, probably couldnt even do it
Kodiak Commando 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2006 I am definetely in the minority here! I am right handed and tie counterclockwise, whenever i tie with someone else they always point that out. I find i can tie faster ane easier this way.
Willy 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2006 I admit it, I wrap the "wrong" way. I accidentally voted a non-vote in the poll and it wouldn't let me vote again. I've tried wrapping the "right" way, but I just don't like it. Does it make me a bad person?
