Fly Tying

fly you hate to tie

Recommended Posts

For me it's anything that requires trimming deer hair. Things like muddler minnows, tarantulas, etc. I'd sooner just buy.

You guys are hilarious, no dries or spun deer hair, what do fill your boxes with? Dare I say it, store bought flies? If there is one pattern that absolutely gets me it has to be married salmon flies, tries it once and stuff went flying allover the place :wallbash: , still can't the bobbin I was using.

Anything involving spinning deer hair.

And frankly, with the possible exception of muddlers (I say "possible" because I think the lambswool head versions are at least as effective) I don't really see the purpose for spun deer hair.

Various synthetics--foam, puglisi fibers,etc.--have made it mostly obsolete in my view. I guess the irresistible is an exception, but I have no interest in fishing with one anyway.

Well, since I hardly ever fish dry flies then yes, I buy a large proportion of them instead of tying them. Is there something wrong with that?

I primarily fish for bass, pike, and saltwater species, none of which will require a size 22 BWO dry.

My vote is for Irresistibles, and yes I buy every one of those little buggers that end up in my box. It's the only fly that I refuse to tie. Can't justify the time invested nor the damage done to my self esteem everytime I try to tie one. Too bad that they catch fish and float like a cork. :wallbash:

Deer hair heads :wallbash: i couldn't even tie them up till about a year ago, now I can tie them, but they still arent very tightly packed and I just hate doing them.

Anything smaller than an 18....eyes aren't really up to it anymore. Good thing I tie mainly for saltwater and warmwater. smallest fly that I've tied in years was a 12...

I don't know why but the only flies I don't like to tie are the mayfly patterns, with the exception of my hex pattern. Just get bored with the same old BWO and others.

You all might think that I am a little crazy by saying this but I hate to tie glo bugs and wooly buggers. They are just too repetitive. When I sit down to tie these I tie enough for the whole season just so it is out of the way.
