What am I looking at?

Recommended Posts

i'm standing by my vote for the hex.

hex has 2 tails and is 18-33 mm in size (about 1 inch)

ephemera has 3 tails and is 13-16 mm in size.

not an entomologist, however, so i'll defer to the experts

I didn't even see the info about the tails, just judged from the size :)

I shouldn't even comment, we don't even have the Hex here in sweden and the Ephemera gets to be 20-25 mm here in sweden. So I am in abit in deep water here. :)

Based on the mayfly identification page of Taxon's website and the information listed above it came up with two possibilities both in the Ephemeridae family: Hexegenia and Litobrancha (Dark Green Drake). I really dont' think this is a Green Drake so that would leave the Hex. I know in Northern Michigan we are only a few weeks off of the Hex hatch so I suppose that is possible, and if it is then I would have to say that is pretty cool :headbang:

as an aside, i have heard that the yellow drake's presence does mean declining water quality. anyone heard anything similar to this or is this completely wrong?

I don't know about the declining water quality issue, but I do know that the only water in the area of where this specimen made it's appearance is a small creek that is pretty much nothing more than a drainage ditch that catches the runoff from any storms we have. Plus... the ditch is also where the local yokels dump there assorted trash items... like Micky D cups and bags, the inevitable Wally's World bags and on and on..... :bs:
