Guest Report post Posted January 30, 2004 FW, Another option to get the fly to turn the way you want is to replace the bucktail with marabou. You'll lose the profile that the bucktail provides, but you've got it pretty tight to the body, so I don't think it'll be a major loss. Plus, you get more movement in the fly. Gray, For crappie flies, go with anything "minnowy" containing yellow, white or chartreuse I like small Mickey Finns, the Marabou Miss (a woooly bugger, minus the hackle and add a marabou wing about 1/3 back from the eye), Cat's Whiskers (chenille body, bead chain eyes, marabou wing at the head) and small Clousers. Guest Report post Posted January 30, 2004 Okay, I was transfixed by the chartreuse and had to tie some. (No wonder that color works on fish; I was all set up to tie something else and had to move it out of the way!!) The first one is on a 10 nymph hook, marabou tail, calf belly, chenille body and k-flash wing, with the tiniest hourglass eyes I have. I think they're 5/32 oz, but I don't remember. the second one is a 10 nymph hook, marabou tail (Clipped the tips) calf tail belly, wrapped k-flash body, k-flash wing, same eyes. the bottom one is a 10 streamer hook, and the same ingredients as the first one. Guest Report post Posted January 30, 2004 That ought to do the job. surenuff! Looks good. 5/32 though? surely not, that's HEAVY Man. standard crappie JIG is only 1/16 watch yer noggin
Guest Report post Posted January 30, 2004 Uhhhhhhhh.... hmmmmmm... okay, I don't know. See, I bought one of those multi-week pill dispensers to hold hooks, beads, cones n stuff like that, and I goofed by not labeling ALL of them. After measuring them, I find that the eyes are exactly half a centimeter across. Way lighter than a 16 oz jig head. Closer to the hundreth oz jig heads I tie on. The round part of the eye fits nicely inside the bend of a number 18 dry fly hook. Any guesses?
Guest Report post Posted January 30, 2004 I think the recipee calls for silver bead chain eyes. I bet it does this for the lighter weight. I had this little neclace that I used to have a pokemon dog tag on it (don`t ask), but I just cut that up, and bam! it`s my eyes. LOL. Hope this helps.
