Tied my first fly

Recommended Posts

another young kid with talent!

DO NOT LOSE THAT FLY ! put it away then in a few months take it out to watch your progess...

all materials behave differently BUT can be bent, shaped and altered somewhat....like the hackle fibers...as you are winding it towards the front of the fly with your right hand (i'm assuming that you are right handed)

lightly at first, stroke the hackle fibers towards the rear of the fly...keep stroking with INCREASED pressure with your fingers until you start to strip the fibers from the fly...yes you will ruin this fly BUT you'll learn just how much pressure you need to exert to bend the fibers back...

use this thinking with all the materials you have...some are inherently weak fibered ...like maribou...and some are much tougher than you'd think...like woodduck flank...

experiment with how much tension you can put onto the thread before that breaks also..

your fly seems to be pretty strong...that is well tyed...if it holds up to a few fish then it is a well tied fly if it falls apart or you can just pull the feathers off of the hook after you're finished tying it...then it is a poorly tied fly...

practice , practice ...etc.

nice fly
