Fly Tying

Nymphs For Bluegills

Recommended Posts

My favorite time of year to fish for bluegill is during and just prior to the spawn. That is when I switch to top water. Any high-floating dry fly will do. Royal Griffiths Gnat, Elk Hair or Moose Hair Caddis are probably my most often used. My favorite bluegill lake has Bluegill, Red Ear and Green Sunfish and yes, hybrids of those. Last year I noticed the green sunfish hybrids were on their beds when all others were gone and caught eight big ones and no bluegill. Not sure if they took over used bluegill beds. Other than that, I too always see bluegill and red ears mixed in the same spawning areas.
