Bruce Derington 0 Report post Posted January 4, 2007 Sniksoh, it looks as though you should have plenty of info on this pattern by now, and you probably know Dan Gapen created the Muddler in 1936 and was originally tied to catch big Brook trout, which it did. The pattern as been changed over the years and it appears the skinny post stays close to how the original looked(as far as the shape of the head) Anyways heres another that I tie quite a few of, although I pretty much use Madonnas. Matt Inman 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2007 Bruce, I have been told of a "Budget Muddler" that you have tied. Could you share some pics of those with the crowd? I have heard they were amazing to say the least.

Regards Bruce Nice fly Bruce, but the head is not as originally tied by Don Gapen. I have examined several originals from the Lefty Kreh collection (now owned by another collector) and the heads were very large, roughly trimmed and sparce, not neatly trimmed and packed like today's examples. Unfortunately I could not take a photo for reference. I prefer your example for my personal flies. Regards, Fred Krow
dsaavedra 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2007 i used to tie muddlers alot when i was first learning to spin deer hair. when i fished them they always floated cuzza the deer hair being hollow and everything. i thought they immitated a minnow, sculpin actually, so i thought it was dumb that they floated and stopped using them. i have never seen a minnow hop around on the surface like a cricket or sumthing. is there a way to make them not float? besides using sinking line? Redleg 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2007 I fish a fast river a lot, so I weigh mine down with lead wire before wrapping the body. Add a brass cone to the head too. I also opt for later versions and others with more movement, lots of maribu and rabbit. Sniksoh- "Modern Streamers For Trophy Trout"
