Bear Coat 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2004 I have to agree with Fatman. Ray Bergman's "Trout" is definatly a classic that is very much usable. I have a copy of it myself and I do refer to it a lot with of the exception of the Fly Lines, they are a little outdated. I have read other book and I will be looking forward to reading some more. But as it stands right now, it has to be "Trout". It also has a great selection of wet flies that at times I either use or alter to match my settings. Guest Report post Posted February 26, 2004 Same as Bamboo: CADDISFLIES and PRODUCTION FLY TYING. CADDISFLIES has helped me catch a lot of trout in Pennsylvania (I also like the colorartion theories of LaFontaine's THE DRY FLY: NEW ANGLES). Lance Kekel 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2004 For me is there's a pair of them. "Trout Stream Insects a streamside guide" Dick Pobst has been the most beneficial over the years for actual fishing. Fly Tyers Benchside reference has just recently replaced Production Fly Tying as my most helpful book at the bench. Not sure if it's because it's new and I've had the other book for a while or if it's the fact that it's so well illustrated for what seems like every possible technique imaginable! BarblessBob 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2004 The book that got me hooked on fly fishing and helped me a great deal is " The Gilly " A Flyfisher's Guide by Alfred G Davy. For those who don't know, a 'Gilly' was a guide, (usually for a Lord or Baron). The man who knew it all. This book takes you from the very basics to lakes where Kamloops trout await. Then on to salmon and Steelhead in the ocean and rivers of BC. I was lucky enough to get an autograghed copy. A few years later the fellow who illustrated the book was at fishing show and I brought the book in got him to sign it also, so it's become somewhat of a keepsake as well as a reference book. Guest Report post Posted March 1, 2004 Mayflies by Knopp & Cormier. Worth every penny of the $49.95 it cost. I think it is the best reference for Mayflies out there.
