fly~by~night 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2007 I use mustad most of all (signitures as well), TMC's come in second. dai-riki's are nice sharp hook...just dont care for the finish being a bright gold. Daiichi hooks i have yet to try due to my local fly shop carrys tmc/mustad's. Mustad have always served me well, and never had a problem with them cept for some boxes will have "differnt" hooks in a bow from time to time....but for the price i cant complain too much.-jason
Guest Report post Posted January 29, 2007 Okay, I'm going to play devil's advocate here for a minute and see where it goes. I'm not going to try to talk anyone out of choosing the hooks they do or talk why I feel my choices are better. My question is for the folks who have talked about all the problems they've had with the Mustad hooks. Have you ever contacted Mustad and given them this information??? If you really want to give your opinion to Mustad send them to [email protected] Jeff Pierce is the North American Sales Coordinator for O. Mustad & Son (USA), Inc. and Partridge. gadabout 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2007 I started with Mustad over 25 years ago and continue to use Mustad. Frankly, I've never tried any of the other brands.
AlG 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2007 I've as well been using Mustad, but for over 22 years....and have them older than that. In that time i've maybe had up to a dozen deformed hooks but never any failures. However besides Mustad, the only other hook i like is Gamakatsu, because i've never really had a problem with them either.
day5 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2007 Mustad hooks are softer but just as strong. I have re bent mustad hooks and still landed steelhead on a re bent hook. Tiemcos lust flat out break. As far as the gold finish on dai riki some days it might be a issue. But I figure if a gold bead head brings em in most days the gold hook should also. I catch a lot of fish on dai riki!!! J. R. Caddick 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2007 Alex, no response from either of them yet. I know that they are both currently on the road so i imagine their time is at a premium. Hopefully i will hear something from one of them soon.
DeweyGreen 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2013 50 % Mustad 50 % Saber Caught some big fish on Mustad never broke a hook the same with the Saber
Rocco 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2013 Daiichi, Gamakatsu, and Dairiki. Local availability and application usually decides. I like to see the hooks before first purchase. Mustad, Tiemco are too soft and thus tend to straighten too easily on bigger fish, trees etc.. I fish wets -- mainly nymphs, wetflies, and streamers. sandflyx 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2013 I voted mustad because thats what always have tied on and still have over 12,000 hooks in stock. I have been getting saber in to lately (dealer)
92Esquire 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2013 Trout flies are all on Tiemco. Love the hooks. Saltwater flies are either on Tiemco (if I'm feeling flush, &*^#$% they are pricey), Mustad (still haven't forgiven them for jacking the price up on 34007 and 34011's a few years back) or Eagle Claw (the 413 is my current favorite hook to "play" with). Bass flies are either on Tiemco 811's or (I prefer) Gamakatsu B10S.

flymaker1 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2013 I have all the major brands, Daiichi, Mustad, TMC, etc. My go to hook is Gamakatsu. I do use Daiichi and Partridge as well.
^^ike 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2013 I've had issues with Mustad quality too as well as Dai-Riki. Mostly in smaller sizes with hook bends breaking while de-barbing. Yes, I'm doing it right and it doesn't happen with other brands. It seems like I loose 3-5 per 50 below size 18's. With the lower price that's tolerable. Never had a problem with TMC and are my go to hook. Love Gamy's too! B10S is my favorite for streamers. I like Daiichi but can't find many places that carry them around me. Don't get me started with Umpqua's U series... bad eyes, inconsistent points, crooked shafts. I've taken too many back and won't try them again. Again, mostly in smaller sizes. The packaging may look like TMC but they are not!
