trolling motors?

Recommended Posts

I acquired a 12 foot flat v bottom aluminum boat recently and would like to put a trolling motor on it. How do I figure out what size I need? I see 30, 36, and 40 lb motors, How do I know what I need?

A friend of mine has a 16 ft. flats skiff that gets pushed nicely by a 55 lb. thrust Minnkota. I don't see why a 30 lb. motor won't push your john boat.

When I used to fish local bass tournaments we had a 30 pound trolling moter on a 14 foot aluminum boat and it would move along really good loaded town with 2 people, gear and a live well. (nice on a canoe too hehe, 30 pound will scoot the canoe along faster than 2 people could paddle it)

If your gonna be on big water or against a current you might want some speed to get you where your going, go big. Small water small motor, draws less juice. Any of those mentioned will push your boat fine.

The boat will be on small local lakes. No current to speak of, and not really windy either. I found out today it will cost me 250 bucks to have a hitch installed on my truck, plus with the trolling motor, and battery and new license tags. My free boat will cost me over 600 bucks.
