Pujic 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 Hey guys, Does anyone know what the material used for legs here is? This tyer has won their category in the Mustad Scandinavian Open for 4 or 5 years running and almost every time with this pattern. It's a great fly but I would love to know what the legs are made out of. I can think of a few uses for this material. Thanks in advance,
J Desjardins 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 Maybe a dyed silver badger hackle after trimming.
Guest Report post Posted March 3, 2004 Looks like hackle but not sure of what type, maybe a furnace dyed??? Fatman
Guest Report post Posted March 3, 2004 i think it looks more like ostrich herl personally. the fibers look soft (on the legs) and not as stiff as hackle would be. maybe a yellow or olive w/ some black on the inside trimmed to give it the tapered look towards the front of the legs
Guest Report post Posted March 3, 2004 whatever it is, it appears to be super fine.....but the barbules aren't webby...you can see each individual fiber. Maybe a micro fine hackle that has been tapered....maybe Envy and John are on to something here.....whatever it si, it appears to have be painstakingly trimmed with a VERY steady hand.....if it is a natural fiber that hasn't been trimmed, it is certainly something I haven't seen before.....I am very intrigiued by this....what the hell is it??! If anyone finds out...share with us....
Pujic 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 Thanks guys. I am not convinced that it is hackle because the color variation tapers at the same degree as the feather (or whatever it is). If it was trimmed hackle, I would think that the color would follow the natural taper of the hackle, so when trimmed it would be noticable. Whatever it is it has a sweet look that I would love to take advantage of.
Guest Report post Posted March 3, 2004 could it be a synthetic hackle type material....something he has incorporated into the fly, but is not necessarily a tying material......something plastic, or nylon.....something he has developed himself? Maybe SOMEONE who works for a major Canadian Fly Fishing Magazine should approach the designer and simply inquire? (hint, hint) and I just realized we were talking about the legs...I was focusing on the tail.....duh.... the legs DO appear a bit webby....maybe it is an exotic that I am not familiar with....still think YOU should ask him!! Guest Report post Posted March 3, 2004 If I had to guess I think it's a yellow hackle trimmed and colored with markers, great looking fly.
Guest Report post Posted March 3, 2004 Looks like the body was made with the same hackle and the Marc Petitjean tool ?
Frank G. Swarner III 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 Nick, I think the tails are any fine stemmed, possibly dry fly hackle, trimmed to shape. As far as the legs, I think they are fibers from an Emu Feather. Not quite sure if they were tied in individually or in a more traditional manner. Pujic 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 LOL Thanks BDH, I think I'm going to ask as soon as I track down a way to contact the tyer. I believe its a her, based on the Slavic-like first name. That may be an advantage as I am pretty fluent in 2 or 3 Slavic languages . If I find out I'll be sure to share with everyone.
Guest Report post Posted March 3, 2004 ah, your European origin had slipped my mind! If you can find out, invite her to the site! And on second inspection...that could very well be Emu!
Pujic 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 This is the lady right here. In her bio it mentions over 40 fly tying awards, and I believe it. http://www.danica.com/flytier/istancev/istancev_bio.htm Let's see how good my Serbian / Slovenian really is. Guest Report post Posted March 3, 2004 oh, yes....read several articles on these two once...I think she started tying when she was just a child....There was a write up on her in one of the tying mags a few years ago...I'll check my bcak issues and see if I can find it!
