So what is your favorite flavor of thread and why.....

I'll tell ya mine. Benecchi for most things and Uni-Thread for larger flies, and Gudebrod for very large flies.......

LOL...... up to about a size 6 i'm all about bennechi...

then for size 4s and 2s and some size sixes, I'm using 6/0 UniThread.

Then for big spun hair flies or larger saltwater streamers i'm with the Gudebrod.

Ya can't just pick one can ya?? LOL

I use mostly Uni when I'm working with 3/0-8/0 If I'm tying really big stuff like deer hair then I use GX2. I also use gudebrod for 10/0. and I "think" my 12/0 is danville.

for anyone that hasn't used bennechi thread, if you use like 10/0 or 12/0, i would suggest you give bennechi a whirl, good strength to it and very very thin, I believe it is the equivalent to 12/0 (though dont' quote me on it).

I mostly use Uni as well lack of options and it has worked for me.

I have been looking for the GX2 but haven't been able to find it. Can anyone recommend it in the Saginaw area or online?

I use uni thread for almost everything. I've tried quite a few of the others out there, but I only use it now. But for spinning deer hair and tying jigs I use flat mono danville.

I prefer Danville 210 for my nymphs, wets, streamers and steelhead flies. I like its strength and because it is very managable. You can untwist it so it lays flat or you can twist it so its like a rope. I like Gudebrod for smaller flies and I like their color selection.

I think that I bounce all over the place, depending on the fly size & type.

Midges: 8/0 Uni

#8-16 flys: 6/0 Uni

streamers, buggers, etc whatever is in the bobbin.

Tying in weight/building up bulk Orvis size G.

Deerhair bugs Guidbrod 3/0

saltwater either Mono thread or Bennochi 3/0 A great thread that I can't find for sale

I don't know why, but for some reason i'm really hooked on the bennechi thread 12/0....... its very strong for its size, and the small diameter allows me to control the clutter a little better. I guess i'm just really used to dealing with it really. It is a little more expensive, but like i said, i'm used to it, so I use it.

Though I do like 6/0 unithread for my mid level sized nymphs, especially ones involving latex or nymph skin because you really gotta lash that stuff down tight or it just won't look right.

I use Danville threads, mainly because it was always available to me as far back as I remember. It's also what I'm used to tying with.

I have had samples of other threads and all worked fine, but some I didn't care for, especially the finer sizes. I just never tied enough small flies to like that type of thread. Danville 6/0, or Spiderweb is as small as I've ever needed. Plus the Danville threads are less expensive than some of the others.

I've tried Uni, Gudebrod, UTC, Benecchi, Gordon Griffiths, and Pearsalls Gossomer, and some that Veniard in England sold, but can't recall the name of it. Chris Helm sent me some samples of a Benecchi Gel spun thread, but it's too slick for me. It's strong, but I didn't care for it, especially for the price of it.

I use a lot of Danville Flat Waxed Nylons and Depth Ray Nylons, and some of their Monocords, Monofilament thread, 6/0 Flymaster, and nylon jig threads.
