charlieb 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2007 My son found some packets of bronze aberdeen hook in sizes 4 to 10 while cleaning out the garage ehind he house he recently bought. My question - are these ok to use fro tying. I'd really hate to see them go to waste. Thanks...Charlie
flytyingscotsman 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2007 I have used Aberdeen hooks before for streamer patterns and had no problems (If I remember rightly they were Eagle Claw). Just remember to check if they are sharp enough before you start tying (try sticking the hook point into your thumbnail - compare with your regular choice of hooks). Maybe a run across a hook sharpening stone is required. Also, make sure they are heavy enough for your application (I would say no if you're after steelhead as the wire is too light). deeky 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2007 Not having a fly shop in the area, I can get and regularly use Mustad aberdeen hooks for a lot of my panfish flies. If you want to get into bigger fish, like larger bass, they might be a little light. That being said, I've done it, just had to bend the point back after a few particularly tough fights (for that type of hook). Size 4-10, you should be just fine. Guest Report post Posted March 14, 2007 They'll do fine for streamer patterns, and I ctaully tie all my panfish patterns on #10 Aberdeen hooks. I even often tie bass poppers on them, some people like stronger hooks for that, but I find the easier penetration of the the thinner wire Aberdeens seems to translate to more hook ups, for me at least. I usually buy Eagle Claw Aberdeens for these applications. Mark Delaney
