I've been jobbed!!

Recommended Posts

Many of you might know that I've been off work since last October... hard to believe it's been 6 months. In that time I've come close to a few jobs, but just missed out.

Finally, though... FINALLY... I've gotten a new job. I start next Monday so this is my last week of being Mr. Mom. What's sucked is that my unemployment basically covered the winter ice and closed trout waters. I got very little fishing done, and in fact did almost nothing with fishing over the winter. I'd planned to tie flies and such, but instead kept my focus on getting a job and doing projects for the house and family. Volunteering at the kids' school, too. Did things like shaving every day and keeping the TV off to make sure I didn't get complacent.

Anyway, it's a really nice bump over my old job and I think it will be a lot more challenging and engaging. Blessedly, I'm starting with 3 weeks vacation and 3 personal days, as well. I don't know if I could've dealt with just having 2 weeks, so that's great.

So... all of you that are between jobs, keep hope! It'll probably take longer than you think, but you'll get there and it might end up being the best thing for you.

Congrats! Sounds like you kept your head in the right place during your time off. That's half the battle. I was off work for a year cuz the company I worked for closed down, and my job is a little too specialized (as in there aren't too many of us around, and those that are usually stay with a company till they retire or fall over). We didn't want to relocate, so we stuck it out.

Good luck on the new job, hope everything works out for you.

Madkasel: Congrats on the job. It's been six months for me also. :crying: I've got flies coming out my ears. Good luck with the new job.

"Did things like shaving every day ..... to make sure I didn't get complacent."

ummm why?

A few days after getting let go, there was a company paid for job search training seminar for me and the 8 or so others who were in the same situation. There was one guy got let go a month or two before me and the rest... he wandered in, we were happy to see, because we'd heard his job search wasn't going well at all. He spoke of "probably losing the house" and commented that he "hadn't shaved in weeks."

Right then I knew... as dire as the financial situation was, he was treating his unemployment more as a vacation than a job to get a new job. I quickly vowed to shave every day... just as I'd had to do when I had a job... and it really was a tangible thing that helped to keep me on track. Helped to keep my head in the game. Helped to keep me mentally focused on the job-search task.

Of course, I did take small breaks from this mindset around hunting season and Christmas and days where my boys were off, but for the most part I stuck to my rules about shaving and no TV or beer during the day.

It really helped!

Thanks! Keep your chin up and make sure you tell everybody you know about how you're looking for a job. Doing just that got me an insider edge on the job I accepted.

I totally respect your ritual, and if more people had your mindest on unemploment we'd be MUCH better off

I just don't like shaving, yeha, beards are ugly, but if it keeps growing there, it must be there for a reason, so I let it grow

good luck
