Help needed Plse on identifying certain materials used on some flies

Recommended Posts

Hi to all - i must confess that whilst this is my 1st post on the forum - i have spent quite some time "lurking in the shadows" spending much time reading many of the existing threads and drooling over some of the flies tied by fourm members.

I live in the u.k. and ill be the 1st to admit im envious of the sheer choice you guys have in terms of materials etc which for one reason or another are just not avialble to us in the u.k. and to that end i need your help plse. A friend recently gave me some fantastic flies he had purchased whilst over in the states a "peanut bunker", "baby bunker" - i think, and a sand eel.

1st pic of the Peanut bunker - i would love to know what braid is used in the tying - its not e-z and not corsair (the only 2 types availble over here) - all i can say is its VERY coarse, hard wearing and tough.

2nd and 3rd pics - again i need help on what make of braids are used - both are completely different from 1 another and again neither are corsair or e-z. In addition both have a gold "paint" used to create the heads prior to being epoxied and id love to know what it is as again ive never seen it available over here in the u.k.

Lastly in the sand eel - i dont know if you can see but the "belly" in the sand eel is what appears to be a white plastic - any ideas on the brand etc.

Any help / advice would be most appreciated and if further closer pics are needed to help identify things then ill do my best as this is becomming a bit of a quest for my having contacted almost everyone i know over here in the u.k. for help and come up short.

thks

Luke

I don't know the tyer personally, but they are Sato's Silverside, Sato's Bunker, etc..

Check out www.Saltwateredge.com they carry those flies. Maybe they know what material it is. I checked their tubing selection and all they have is EZ body braid.

Good luck!!

Frank

E-Z Body Braid and Corsair are probably the most common. I think Orvis offers a couple of different braids, but they don't hold the shape as well as the first two. I use the E-Z braid for wide body flies, like Peanut Bunker, Shad, Sunfish, Silversides, Bay Anchovy, Sand eels, and some fresh water minnows. I find it easier to shape than the Corsair. It also stretches, and then holds the stretch. Corsair, I use for Sand Eels, Killies, Sculpins, small minnows. The last year or so, I've used them to form the underbody of the fly, and covered it with some bargin basement Sili Skin, I picked up at an Orvis Warehouse sale. I also use them if I want to create a bullet proof popper. Just slide it over the popper body and use a flexible clear varnish or epoxy to coat them.
