GunnerDonn 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2007 I have had extremely good luck on a plain and simple olive wooley worm. Tie it on a 3x long shank #6 hook, using medium olive chenille and a medium brown brown hen hackle. Takes less than a minute to tie and is one of the most productive flies I've used in many states and waters; it is by far my favorite night fishing fly. I took a visiting scientist at Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico night fishing in a lake in the Jemez Mountains and we had a spectacular night of catching numerous trout in the 2 - 5 pound class. I was stationed there at the time and leaving for another duty station and he ordered 1000 of that one fly. You don't need to add anything to this fly and it doesn't matter which way you palmer the hackle. Gunner

agv4b 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2008 wataugafishin- Â I am assuming you are fishing the Watauga and Holston rivers in east TN. I grew up in Bristol for 20 years, fished last week on the Watauga. Bar none, best and simplest fly on those two rivers is a size 16, English Pheasant tail. Â Also, a local guide by the name of Mike Adams, ties a fly called the redbutt. It's really easy- take a red 8/0 thread, build a small head at the bend of the hook with the red thread, then body is just peacock earl wrapped to the head, then put in a soft hackle collar, and then of course then you will have a red head as well at the front when you tie in the hackle and finish the fly. Â Hope that helps!
