bulk tying thread

Recommended Posts

It was about 20 years ago, I was able to get 2 4 ounce spools of black nymo. There must be 3000 yards of thread on each. I only with I was able to find more. I use a drill to load from the bulk spools to standard size spools, and onto sewing machine bobbin spools for my travel kit. I would check on the Uni Thread web site or Danville website for bulk spools.

Hi Silver Doctor,

I have a Danville account and yes they do stock bulk spools (cones) measured by the pound and according to my price list it is sold in unwaxed only. The price for single strand floss (unwaxed) is $90.00 per pound and the price for 6/0 unwaxed is $110.00 per pound, retail. For that quantity of thread I'd sell wholesale but that's an aweful lot of thread to use before it dry rots; I tie more than most people on this group and Gretchen & I couldn't begin to use a cone of thread before it goes to heck. I also sell Danville by the 12-spool box; a much better option if you are a commercial tier. Take care & ...

I totally agree with Al and buy thread by the box of 12 with 200 yd amounts each. I may be in a hurry to go fishing, but when I sit down to tying, I find it extremely relaxing and do lot look to cut time. If you are tying for speed and time then there are lots of short cuts and one I used in the past was to load several bobbins with different colors and sizes of thread and multiple ones of those I use more frequently.

the Idea of buying by hte box is a good idea. I'm not so much into speed tying although I do tie a lot of flies. In this day and age I dotry to cut corners on cost where I can. The price of materials seems to climb slow.y and steadily.

The old NYMO thread is available in 5000 yard spools for about $15.00 per cone. It is marketed as "beading thread" used by jewelry makers. The smallest size available is 2/0.

An example site is listed here, a more thorough search will find it cheaper.
