Gregg 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2007 I need to tie up a bunch of bead head zebra midges. What is the best hook to tie really small bead heads, and why? At first I thought the Daiichi 1140 <Link> would be good, but then I worried about the short shank. Now I am thinking it would be something with a 2x long shaft or something to get as much clearance for the bead head, but I really don't have a clue. I would love to hear from someone of the great fisherman on this forum. Thanks!

Slate_Drake_9 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2007 I use regular Mustad light wire dry fly hooks for my zebra midges without any problem. A lot cheaper than many other hooks.
Dale 0 Report post Posted November 4, 2007 I second what flytire said. The TMC 2457 is a heavy wire and the 2487 is a light wire. Both are curved scud hooks and tie up for beadhead midges really well.

kamloopstrout 0 Report post Posted November 4, 2007 Gregg, As the guys said the 2457 TMC/ 2487 TMC are excellent hook it depends on what you are after and the diameter of the hole size of the bead. There are other hooks that might help starting with the 2499 SP BL which has become popular in my area and if you want a longer profile we use a 2302 TMC.
