TFF:St. Croix Avid

Recommended Posts

So this saga begins a couple weekends ago when I snapped my 5 wt. Basspro fly rod on a 20" rainbow. I'm not gonna complain about that rod, though. It had been through more than any fly rod should ever be subjected to and only broke because I was so freakin' rough on it. The rod being irrepairable, I started looknig around for new rods. I wanted something a little bit slow, but with enough backbone to really lay into a big fish. A guide buddy of mine let me fish his St. Croix Avid on the South Holston River and I really liked the rod. I stumbled upon a good deal on ebay ($120 vs. the $210 retail) and I got to try out my new 9' 5 wt. for the first time yesterday. It worked like a dream pulling in these nice 'bows.

The slow action makes for tossing heavy rigs (like the #10 tungsten stonefly, 3 #4 split shots, and an indicator I was using yesterday) a breeze.

I would highly reccomend this rod to anyone who wants a high-quality, made in USA rod with a lifetime warranty at an unbeatable price.
