utyer 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2007 I have counted mine. Not for this post, but just recently, and I came up with 12,000. I have been tying for over 40 years, and some of these hooks are from my fathers stuff. I have Herters popper hooks, and Mustad hooks I never see any more, but most of the hooks are ones I purchased while tying custom orders. The reason I counted my hooks is that like many on this post my hooks were stored in big flat multi compartment boxes. All nicely sorted out at to size and style, until I dropped two of them. Then I had one massive pile of hooks in the carpet of my new house. Well it took quite a while to finally tackle the job of resorting the hooks, and when I got to it, I though I might as well count them. A wise man once said to me, "A man can't have too much fishing tackle."

overbrook 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 Wicked Carpenter...you are one sick puppy! LOL ....I thought I was bad! I'd give a rough estimate of about 9,000...probably more...I had just bought 2,500 on ebay...and now bought another 1,500 in the last week....so i might be nearing 13,000 less a few flies tied...LOL
Guest Report post Posted December 12, 2007 I'm always looking on eBay for Mustad 1,000 packs. Haven't seen any in a long time. I bought 7,000 from a guy on there. Some i got for $34. The higest priced 1,000 pack i bought was $65 for size 16 3906's it was a bidding war on those Best deal i had was a 1,000 pack of egg hooks or $17 BFR, I loaded up on the Cabelas $5 Mustad hook bin 100 packs also. That put a hurt on the credit card Brent
Ten Bears 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 I won't even attempt to count all of the hooks I have at home but I will tell you that for my travel kit (which sees lots more use than anything at home) I keep anywhere from 25 to 50 of each type of hook I carry in my bag. I keep about 21 different hooks so that comes to somewhere between 300 to 600 hooks at any given time. I only classify hooks by type and size for my travel bag. I keep Standard dry fly hooks in sizes 10 through 24; standard wet fly hooks in sizes 12 through 18; scud hooks 12 through 18; streamer hooks in sizes 6,8 and 10. All of these fit nicely into two 12 compartment boxes made for hooks (zero tolerance between lid and compartment walls to prevent hook movement). The hook boxes are top center of photo. J.Z 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 well, i would have to start out with about 200 blind eyes, upturned vintage trebles, regular upturned eyes, 300 bass bug hooks, 20 dry fly hooks (yes, you are hearing me right, considering i just tied about 500 dries and nymphs in the past 2 months.) Also, i have about 10 pounds of flies that i am not happy with, and everyonce and a while, i will light about 100 of them on fire with some gas... yes gas, i is a wee bit quicker so i am guessing i have around 1000 hooks overall. And in my boxes, another 1000 flies. oh yes, i have only been tying for a year
oatka 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 JZ - I hope Bud doesn't see you use gas, he's used a chainsaw already, and i could only imagine what he'd try to outdo the gas you use. Wickedcarpenter - i'll make you a deal, to make up for you getting screwed a few years ago. You send me all those hooks and I'll send you EVERY fly i have. i'll empty out EVERY box i have and they are all yours! crazy collection. I still think I get the prize for least amount. here's my hook collection, minus 1 or 2 25 hook packs that are partially used.
Guest Report post Posted December 12, 2007 LoL! I didn't really get screwed. I was willing to give the hooks away to someone who would use them and just wanted 2 patterns in return seeing as i spent over $7 to ship em. No biggie as i don't tie Saltwater stuff. He may still be working on them 2 patterns He post on the Forum every now and then so He's still kicking.
RoyalWulff 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 Hey Wicked I totally didnt even read that part of your post. That is total BS that, the kid didnt send you back the flies. Sorry to hear that, a nice deed like that deserves a nice response. I think we should all tie up and ship out a few flies to wicked.

Bud Guidry 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 you guys should see what an m-80 tied to a fully dressed salmon fly can do. it completely cleans the hook off of any threads, silks, tinsels and feathers. oh, and i got about 12 hooks. i had 14 but lost two when the m-80 blew them away. crappie 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 I probably have 5 to 6,000. I tie on the hooks that I have and don't worry if I can't match the hook exactly. I tie most patterns on three sizes anyways. I use some Mustad and EagleClaw as they are heavier hooks and give a little faster drop rate.
