coulee fishing 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2008 Sorry I did not do a search, and this topic has probably been discussed already, but, over the years I have tried using Mustad hooks, and have always gone back to the higher dollar hooks. I went to Gander Mountain today to restock some of my hooks and decided that I would try Mustad again. They are about half the price of the hooks I normally use. I am tying up a bunch of pan fish flies so I thought that I could probably get away with these hooks instead. In the past I have had problems with hook breakage with the Mustads. Has anybody noticed any improvement in the quality of there hooks? What hooks do you guys use? I usually use TMC's
Guest Report post Posted January 12, 2008 I have been using Mustad hooks for probably more than 30 years and I have NEVER had a hook break. I use them in both salt and fresh water and have landed fish over 100 pounds without a failure. In one case I hooked into a 25 lb. permit after it had gotten the hook into it's crusher jaws. The hook was bent and mangled but it still set and survived a 20 minute fight.
maddog48 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2008 Majority of what I use is TMC. As hard as it's getting to be getting what I have special ordered from the local fly shop though I may have to rethink that. I also use a bunch of Mustad and some Daiichi. There's a box or two of the Montana Fly Company buried on my bench somewhere, too. I guess it boils down to what's available at the time. Wapsi is putting out a new line called Lightning Strike. I bought a kirbed scud hook 25 pack for $4.10. A 100 pack runs a little over $13 if I remember right. Pretty dependable hook at a great price. RoyalWulff 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2008 I have used many types of hooks, and I like different models from each brand. But I have to say I have more mustads then any, and I have NEVER had a problem with one EVER! I find the barbs mash done great and never broke one, although I have bent some smaller ones, but that was no fault of the hook. I love the 3906b oh man, so good! lol
carlp5351 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2008 For nymphs and streamers I use Dia-rikki hooks. I like the value for the money. 50 hooks for $5.95, hard to beat. For my lite wire hooks I use TMC, hard to beat TMC. I wish I could afford nothing but TMC. Carlp5351
Scud 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2008 I use mostly TMC but I do have Daiich and Mustads. I use TMC for the dries, scuds and midges and the others for Mynphs and streamers. Probably 15 packs of TMC and 7 of the other 2.
Worstcaster 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2008 I usually use Mustad or TMC. No real brand loyalty. Just whatever the shop is selling.
Hot Tuna 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2008 I had the choice of Mustad, Tiemco or Daichi for my recent Wulff swap and I chose Mustad 94840. I liked the slightly larger eye for the bushy fly. I have thousands of Mustad hooks and they are fine...Mustad gets a bad rap. This is just another example of what James Prosek described as the "technocracy" of flyfishing in recent years...you will see that technocracy in action at the Marrlboro and Somerset shows coming up.... Kodiak Commando 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2008 I have always used gami's, especially their glo bug hook because i fish so many egg patterns and tube flies and bead setups. That being said I don't know if their that much metter than tiemco or mustad i've just grown up with them since my favorite local shop carries them and i haven't seen a reason to change. Esox 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2008 Most of my ties are # 8 and up. More than half of them go on Mustad 34007 and 34011's The rest go on Mustad Signature specialty hooks or Gammys.
beadhead 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2008 Try Saber hooks $7.00 a 100 any type ,and size So far no problem with them
Redwings1 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2008 I use mostly Tiemco and Diichi, but also do use Mustad from time to time for big streamers
Olórin 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2008 I actually use all kinds of hooks in my tying. I tie for myself, customers and in various classes. I often run into issues where people want a certain brand of hook. That said.... I use Mustads (including signature line) most often, TMC second, Daiichi and Gamakatsu third and then various specialty hooks. I have never had a problem with hook breakage on any of them. I can add that over the years I have had many student tiers have problems with hook breakage because they were clamping down on the hook to hard and/or they did not clamp down on the hook correctly for the jaws on their vise. If the hook is either miss placed in the jaws or clamped down to hard you can stress the wire and the end result is a weaker hook. But that is just my two cents.... Be Well, - Olórin
Lance Kekel 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2008 99% of the time I tie on Daiichi. I like the durability and the micro-barbs. Much better than the big gnarly mustad barbs.
Steve P 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2008 Tiemco, Mustad, Partridge, TMC, Dai Rikki, pretty much whatever and to be honest it really depends on what i am tying I like most like the TMC for dries but most of my flies are tied on Mustad and Tiemco as they are the easiest and cheaper of the hooks to get ah old of around here and the only breakage I have ever had was on a size 10 4xl mohair leech tied on a Mustad that I had beat against a rock face on my back cast so many times I can't tell you but for about 30 minutes I missed a ton of strikes and couldn't figure out why, I didn't have a wind knot but couldn't get a hook set to save my life broke right where the bend started, but that was not the hooks fault.
