Pheasant Tail Nymph

Recommended Posts

I am looking to tie up some Pheasant Tails and was looking at some different patterns. There are a lot of different styles. Some have no "legs" and some have them tied like beard style and some have them off to the side. Then some have them coming back over the back of the fly over the wing case. Is there one style that works better? Is there a "right" way to tie them? :(

Hi djmyers

The Pheasant tail nymph is easily one of the best flies you can have in your box not that you need me to tell you but I filmed myself tying it my way which is very simple , here is the link for you to have a look.

I don't bother with the legs and I have no problem catching fish on my PTN. There are so many variations on the PTN that I would suggest finding a simple pattern that you think you will be able to tie well and stick with that until you have a good reason to change.

DJ , If you're starting out in flytying and you're going to tackle the PTN because of it keep these points in mind. Try to splay the tail. The natural has 3 separate tail sections. Try to make them in a measured length to each section, and make it very segmented. Make a wing casing that is proportionate, and then make the legs look like they belong there. Get those parts down and after a bit of tyeing those there becomes no right way or wrong way to tye them. When you shot for proportionately correct and make a dozen that all look the same you are getting close to have it down. Good luck with this.

The PT nymph has to be one of my top six nymphs, works damn near everywhere, and if effective in a full range of sizes. You cannot go wrong tieing any of the common variations, as I've had luck with all of them.

Better yet, why don't you tie up more than one style and try them on your home water?

I tied some side legs(what I thought were wings at 1st cause I was new) on it. never tried it without. prolly works the same. heres a pic of my pt and flashback pt.. these were ties when I was pretty new. even so. they both caught me a good share of fish! if i don't recall the one without a beadhead has lead wire wrapped under it? like said above just tie lots of different styles. also search yahoo or google for the magic brown fly leaves out alot or parts of a pt including the peacock and legs. this is also a pheasent tail nymph variation with believe or not just a beadhead brown thread and pheasent tail. watch how its made so simple but prolly just as effective! heres the link.

Good question! I have never thought about, I just tie them with legs. I will have to tie some without legs and compare them.

If you don't mind I would like to add a question to your thead.

I just finished tying 20 PTN in each size 12, 14, 16 and 18. Do any of you tie them bigger or smaller than that?

If you are going to try the pheasant tail nymph you may as well try it's sister fly the Hares Ear Nymph I have a video on you tube about it.

Happy tying,

Jason.
